Charles Weir joins firm’s litigation team and brings extensive healthcare and cross-industry experience
Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP, a multidisciplinary, integrated professional services firm, announced today that prominent litigator Charles Weir has joined as a partner in its Los Angeles office. Bringing almost two decades of healthcare and cross-industry experience to the firm’s nationally recognized litigation and healthcare practices, Weir represents clients on a broad range of complex business litigation and internal investigations.
Focusing on class actions, shareholder derivative suits, qui tam litigation and commercial disputes, Weir regularly represents public and private companies and executives in industries including healthcare, entertainment, energy and technology. In particular, Weir’s experience representing major healthcare providers will augment the firm’s national healthcare group through his involvement in complex matters ranging from class actions to qui tam claims to suits brought under the Federal and California False Claims Acts and Section 1871 of the California Insurance Code.
“Charles’ experience working with companies in sectors that align perfectly with our industry focused platform in high stakes litigation matters makes him a valuable addition to our top name litigation and regulatory practices,” said Donna L. Wilson, Manatt’s CEO and Managing Partner. “He is a proven litigator with a national practice and will be a valuable asset across our industry focused groups.”
“Charles is a top litigator in the healthcare and complex commercial space,” said Gregory Pimstone, partner and leader of the firm’s healthcare litigation practice. “He will add depth and quality to our healthcare and complex litigation teams, and we are tremendously excited to have him on board.”
Weir has been defense counsel in two of the largest shareholder derivative lawsuits in California’s history, and his class action matters have included claims of unfair business practices, fraud, off-label prescription drug marketing, breaches of fiduciary duty, false advertising, violations of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) and violations of both federal and state securities laws. Weir has also represented some of the largest healthcare providers in the country in connection with False Claims Act litigation and investigations.
“Manatt is a firm I’ve always admired. I’m thrilled to join such a talented and diverse team,” said Weir. “The firm’s litigation reputation, not just here in California but also beyond, is striking. I’m excited to provide my clients access to its broader pool of professionals, who range from leading transactional and regulatory attorneys to consultants, business advisers and technologists.”
Weir earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of California – Riverside, magna cum laude, and his juris doctorate from Harvard Law School.
