Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP, a multidisciplinary, integrated professional services firm, announced today that Ralph Muller, former CEO of the University of Pennsylvania Health System (UPHS), will join as a national advisor in its Manatt Health group effective January 2, 2020.
Muller led the University of Chicago Hospitals and UPHS, two of the nation’s most renowned academic health systems. He has unparalleled experience transforming how academic health systems deliver quality care to diverse patient populations and achieve leadership across their missions of research, clinical services, education and community engagement. Muller’s leadership experience and depth of knowledge in healthcare management, policy and economics will enhance Manatt Health’s advisory services to leading healthcare organizations across the country.
“Ralph’s experience leading a collaborative and diverse group of forward-thinking professionals throughout his career mirrors what we’re building at Manatt with our growing team of lawyers, policy leaders and consultants,” said Donna Wilson, Manatt’s CEO and Managing Partner.
In his 16 years as CEO of UPHS, Muller transformed the organization into the leading regional health system, now caring for more than five million patients annually. Muller led the development of the clinical practices into a true group structure, implemented a novel funds flow that aligns clinical with research and educational requirements, and grew the health system to six acute care hospitals and a broad array of outpatient centers. Under his leadership, Penn Medicine delivered outstanding financial results, supporting the expansion of the research enterprise into a national and international powerhouse of outstanding faculty.
“Ralph is a wonderful addition to our academic center team led by senior managing director Tom Enders, and brings an unparalleled managerial and policy experience that will be highly valued by our healthcare clients,” said Bill Bernstein, leader of Manatt Health.
“I am looking forward to joining my new Manatt colleagues,” said Muller. “I have admired Manatt Health’s work for a long time and expect to work with them on the challenging leadership and strategy issues that frustrate executives and policy leaders throughout the industry.”
Muller has served as chairman of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), chairman of the Council of Teaching Hospitals and Health Systems (COTH), chairman of the University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC), and chairman of the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago (NORC), among others. He earned his master’s degree in government from Harvard University and holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Syracuse University.
