Manatt Consumer Protection Partner Bezalel Stern was quoted in The National Law Journal where he discussed the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) recent scrutiny of companies’ claims about their use of artificial intelligence (AI) and what it means for market participants moving forward.
In the article, Stern explained that these scams manifest in multiple ways: either AI is used to cheat consumers out of something or a company alleges to have an AI product or tool. He noted that a recent claim by the FTC signals that the agency is evaluating AI in a “holistic” way and is looking at how a company’s misuse of the term “AI” could deceive consumers. “It’s good that the FTC is reminding us that just because the technology is new, doesn’t mean it’s not regulated,” Stern said.
