Leader of Manatt’s Real Estate Transactions and Finance practice and the Cannabis and CBD practice Anita Famili was quoted in Law360 about New York City officials bringing landlords into the fight against the unlicensed cannabis market.
In the article, Famili discussed similar actions undertaken in Los Angeles, which included threatening landlords with misdemeanors, hefty fines and cutting off utilities to address the issue of illegal cannabis operators. "It cannot be a one-size-fits-all approach to addressing the illicit market," Famili said. "If you can [control utilities] and then at the same time ... do a public campaign to let other landlords know that we're going to not only potentially civilly charge you some big dollars, we're going to criminally prosecute you, too ...then the landlord industry is going to be more reluctant to participate."
