Federal and State Policy Levers to Maintain Access to MOUD During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Speakers: Jocelyn A. Guyer, M.P.A, Managing Director, Manatt Health | Jodi Manz, MSW, Project Director, Chronic and Vulnerable Populations, National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP) | Hannah Snyder, M.D., Co-PI of California Bridge; Primary Care and Addiction Medicine Specialist, Public Health Institute

The COVID-19 pandemic has adversely impacted vulnerable populations, particularly individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD). Individuals with OUD are more likely to experience homelessness or incarceration and may be at increased risk of exposure to COVID-19. Many also suffer from weakened respiratory and pulmonary health due to extended opioid use, potentially increasing the severity of COVID-19-related illness. Without access to OUD treatment or peer supports, they may also be more likely to overdose while they are alone as a result of shelter-in-place orders or other public health measures.

In a new webinar presented with the Foundation for Opioid Response Efforts (FORE), Manatt Health managing director Jocelyn Guyer, California Bridge Co-PI Hanna Snyder and Jodi Manz, Project Director for Chronic and Vulnerable Populations at the National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP), review emerging federal and state actions and opportunities to assist those with OUD through the COVID-19 pandemic. They examine the latest federal and state guidance focused on supporting people with OUD and maintaining access to medications for OUD during the response to the pandemic, including examples and best practices emerging from states.
