Manatt Submits Comments to State Water Board on Streamlining Desalination Facility Permitting

Client Alert

Amid California’s water crisis, Manatt professionals submitted a letter to the California State Water Resources Control Board highlighting key opportunities for the development of new desalination plants in the State to alleviate pressures.

This letter provides information on the potential benefits of developing new desalination plants in California, particularly in the context of ongoing drought and water scarcity. It highlights the importance of securing a reliable and sustainable water supply and recommends that the State Water Resources Control Board consider the 2023 Seawater Desalination Siting and Streamlining Report to help expedite the permitting process for desalination projects.

Desalination is often considered a potential solution for providing drought-resistant fresh water, helping to reduce the strain on California's overburdened freshwater resources. Advances in desalination technology, including improved energy efficiency and sustainable practices, make it a viable option for addressing the state’s water needs. The letter also outlines the economic benefits, such as job creation and local growth, associated with the construction and operation of desalination facilities.

The letter was authored by Manatt Energy and Environment Partner David C. Smith. In addition, our desalination working group includes Jordan Bromley, Kathleen L. Brown, Susan K. Hori, Craig A. Moyer, Che J. Salinas and Wendy J. Greuel.
