Brown Featured in Harvard Case Study on Success of UMass Memorial Health’s Anchor Mission

Manatt Health Partner was featured in a Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health case study about UMass Memorial Health’s (UMMH) accomplishments throughout the first five years of anchor mission implementation, including how his leadership at UMMH contributed to the organization’s improvement of community health and positioned it for future success.

After learning about how a CEO was addressing food insecurity through an Anchor Mission in Ohio, Brown and his colleague were inspired to utilize UMass Memorial’s economic power to improve community health and well-being. Having a background in public service and law allowed Brown to propel the Anchor Mission and through his leadership, strived to sustain the mission with both tangible achievements and a paradigm shift in the organization’s understanding its role in the community.

“There can be confusion about what an Anchor Mission truly is. It is not really a program or an initiative. Rather, it is a philosophy, an ethos, a way of life, an intentional decision/belief that we should use resources not just for healthcare but for equity outside our own four walls. It involves a willingness to serve any and all needs,” Brown said.
