Manatt Health Partner Randi Seigel was quoted in an article by Modern Healthcare about how Trump’s win in the presidential election could reduce access to abortion care and medication for patients who access services through telehealth.
According to the article, the upcoming Administration may implement restrictions on abortion care, such as by directing government agencies to enforce laws affecting carriers that ship abortion drugs or changing the interpretation of the Comstock Act, which currently allows for abortion medication to be mailed.
Trump could direct the Justice Department to begin enforcing the law or change the current interpretation, which would affect carriers shipping drugs used for abortion, Seigel said. “I think if you're in the business of providing abortion inducing medication through the mail after a telehealth encounter, there is a real and present threat to that business,” she added.
