Manatt Health’s recent webinar with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services on the state’s early successes surrounding its Healthy Opportunities Pilots (HOP) was featured in various publications, including Health Plan Weekly, Healthcare Innovation and The Assembly.
The HOP model—which represents the nation’s first comprehensive program aimed at addressing non-medical, health-related needs for qualifying Medicaid enrollees—was cited as a “win-win-win” for the state, communities and people enrolled in Medicaid. A recent program evaluation has shown that North Carolina’s investments in housing, nutrition and other social services have significantly benefitted enrollees while lowering utilization and cost of care.
Manatt Health Partner Melinda Dutton, who moderated the webinar, noted in Health Plan Weekly that North Carolina is among a growing number of states addressing the health related social needs of people enrolled in Medicaid, adding that “what sets North Carolina apart is the breadth of the services that they are offering and the fact that they have been operating” successfully for so long now.
