Big Law Firms, Seeking 'Seat at the Table,' Join AI Safety Consortium

Paul Luehr, Manatt Privacy and Data Security Partner and co-leader of the Firm’s artificial intelligence (AI) practice, was quoted in The American Lawyer about Manatt’s joining of the AI Safety Institute Consortium (AISIC). 

AISIC is a government-organized initiative under the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), formed to address AI safety by shaping related policy and analyzing capabilities and risks of upcoming AI. As clients are experiencing more issues with AI litigation, many law firms, including Manatt, felt the importance of joining AISIC. “We wanted a seat at the table while important AI standards were being formed,” said Luehr. “[Our clients] will come to us with something like the NIST guidelines and ask, ‘What should we do now?’ And so we thought we could offer … helpful perspectives about what works and what doesn’t work.”
