Manatt’s Christine Reilly, leader of the firm’s consumer protection, advertising and competition practice, spoke to Bloomberg Law about a new measure in Congress aimed at cracking down on illegal robocallers.
The TRACED Act by Sens. John Thune (R-South Dakota) and Ed Markey (D-Massachusetts) would “increase the [Federal Communications Commission’s] enforcement authority against illegal robocallers and mandate the adoption of call authentication systems,” according to Bloomberg Law.
Reilly said that there is an “inherent push and pull between wanting to protect customers and wanting to protect legitimate business needs.” She also said that getting Republicans and Democrats in Congress to work together on this bill could prove difficult.
“It’s very hard to craft a bill that balances competing viewpoints on how far the law should go.”
