Manatt’s Joel Ario, a managing director with Manatt Health, spoke to InsideHealthPolicy about a recent push from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to increase price transparency in exchange plans.
CMS is seeking feedback from a range of stakeholders on how it can best help consumers understand the cost-sharing responsibilities of both programs.
Ario, a former CMS official, suggested that carriers give their enrollees real-time information on what services will cost under their benefit plans.
The concept could be a complement to posting list prices publicly, he said.
“The process generally works by creating a drop-down menu from which a consumer can find the service in question, and pick out the provider,” said Ario. “There would be a caveat explaining how and why the final number could be different, but that’s the core idea.”
