Manatt’s Sophia Yen, a partner in the firm’s entertainment, media and sports litigation practice, was quoted by South China Morning Post for an article on the rise of mobile video apps in China.
Movie executives, the publication noted, do not see the rise of mobile video apps in China as a threat. Yen explained that online streaming platforms are considered complementary to China’s 50,000 theater screens, which translates into one screen for every 28,000 people, compared with one screen per 8,000 people in the U.S.
“There are still places in China where you don’t have cinemas available. [Streaming] could be the way to give more content a window without being shown in actual theatres,” she said.
