Manatt’s Katherine Blair, co-chair of the firm’s capital markets practice, was quoted by the Daily Journal on a new California law that requires corporations to appoint women as board members.
California’s Governor Jerry Brown recently signed SB 826 into law, which requires that companies headquartered in California have at least one woman serve on their board by the year 2020.
“I am not surprised Governor Brown signed it,” said Blair. “I think that it is assumed it will be legally challenged.” Blair also expressed uncertainty about the law’s ability to survive a legal challenge, but noted that the Governor’s signing of the bill came during the ongoing #MeToo movement and the Judge Brett Kavanaugh Supreme Court nomination process.
