Manatt’s Bruce Gyory, a senior advisor in the firm’s government and regulatory practice, was quoted by NY State of Politics for an article on New Yorkers who are looking toward the 2020 presidential election.
While the current president is the first New Yorker to sit in the White House in more than 60 years, the publication explained that in 2020, three New York Democrats may be vying for the nomination—Governor Andrew Cuomo, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.
“We have a very diverse state so you have to prove, if you’re a New Yorker, that you can carry not just a huge metropolis in New York City but the suburbs and not get blown out in the rural areas,” Gyory explained.
He mentioned that de Blasio, fresh off his successful re-election bid, is planning to travel to Iowa, the state that hosts the first-in-the-nation caucus, while Cuomo and Gillibrand have a statewide standing that could also help.
“In Governor Cuomo and Senator Gillibrand, we have two very accomplished political figures who are proven both good at governing and commanding public attention,” Gyory said.
