Manatt’s Lindsay Conner, co-chair of the firm’s entertainment and media practice, was quoted in The Hollywood Reporter in an article that featured advice from the industry’s top dealmakers on closing entertainment deals between Hollywood and China.
One key insight, according to the publication, is to be a generous host to potential business partners. Chinese businesspeople have a custom of picking up the tab for out-of-town guests, and it is important to return the favor when partners touch down in Los Angeles.
“Be generous and welcoming,” explained Conner. “Chinese culture is very welcoming, and when that behavior is reciprocated by U.S. executives, it makes Chinese negotiators feel more comfortable—and that leads to more open, flexible and friendly negotiations.”
