The Los Angeles Times quoted Manatt’s Ken Julian, co-chair of the firm's corporate investigations and white collar defense practice, for an article about a retrial of former Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca for allegedly obstructing an FBI investigation into the county’s jails. In a recent mistrial, all but one of the jurors voted to acquit Baca.
Julian, a former assistant U.S. Attorney who prosecuted former Orange County Sheriff Michael Carona on corruption charges, said it would have been unusual if U.S. Attorney Eileen Decker had backed off following the 11-to-1 deadlock.
“The U.S. Attorney’s approach to the high-level public officials has always been to go after them hard,” Julian said. “So on that level, it is not a surprise they are taking another shot at him.”
