Medicaid Expansion Savings to Continue

Oregon Saving Big From Medicaid Expansion
– The Bulletin

The Bulletin quoted Manatt's Deborah Bachrach, a partner in the firm's Healthcare practice, for an article about Oregon's savings from Medicaid expansion.

A Manatt Health study, in partnership with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, analyzed finances in 11 states that expanded Medicaid eligibility and found they spent far less on programs for the uninsured, slowed their Medicaid spending growth, took in federal dollars that created jobs and benefited hospitals and increased revenue from insurer and provider taxes.

"There is no question that the savings continue," said Bachrach. Even as states begin paying for the new enrollees beginning in 2017, Bachrach said, "You're generating savings in '14, '15 and '16, you could in essence bank them and start to use them in '17 when the state share first kicks in."
