USA Today Looks to Joel Ario on Industry Groups' Promotion of Health Exchanges

September 2, 2013 - USA Today interviewed Manatt's Joel Ario, a managing director with Manatt Health Solutions, on the coalition of healthcare providers, insurers bill collectors and community groups that have stepped in to promote health exchanges.

As reported by USA Today, the coalition may differ on issues, but it understands the financial gains that are to be made from the latest step in implementing the 2010 healthcare law. For example in Oklahoma, the president of health insurance broker Magoon & Associates pulled together provider groups, hospitals and insurers to start marketing the state exchanges. Hospitals and providers hope to cut their costs with more insured customers, and insurers hope to gain new customers.

Many of the industry groups supporting the exchanges are those that expect to benefit financially from the law, said Ario. But there are other unexpected groups involved, he said, such as "the guys who collect bad debts. That's raised some eyebrows because some people wonder about their motivation."
