Manatt health care litigation Partner Barry Landsberg has been named a 2021 Health Care MVP by Law360. The publication recognized Landsberg for his work securing notable victories on behalf of hospitals in California.
In his MVP profile, Barry noted that biggest accomplishment in the past year was his representation of Dignity Health in a financial bias lawsuit brought by physician Sundar Natarajan who requested a peer review hearing after the medical staff recommended his termination due to alleged substandard care. The physician argued that his hearing officer should be disqualified because the officer was previously appointed in other hearings within Dignity’s network of hospitals, Law360 reported.
The California Supreme Court ultimately rejected Natarajan’s challenge, concluding there was no evidence that the hearing officer was biased. “It was a very significant win for hospitals throughout the state of California, [and] started with our client Dignity Health, which is the largest operator of hospitals in California,” Landsberg said.
As for why Landsberg chose health care law, he said he had wanted to work in a law firm doing civil litigation, and health care “happened to be the focus area.”
“I feel like I’m one of the earlier lawyers to be in on a fabulous subject area that matters greatly to all of us, and the issues just never cease coming,” he added.
