Manatt’s Managing Partner and CEO Donna Wilson and healthcare litigation partner Barry Landsberg were recognized by Daily Journal on its 2020 “Top 100” lawyers list, which celebrates leading lawyers in California who are conducting cutting-edge legal work and have made a significant impact in the industry.
Wilson was recognized for leading the firm during a time of unprecedented transition due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In particular, Daily Journal highlighted her role in leading a major overhaul of Manatt’s IT infrastructure that allowed the firm to pivot to a remote model “at the flip of a switch.” In her profile, Wilson was also recognized for her work leading the firm’s COVID-19 Client Service Response Team, as well as her CCPA compliance work on behalf of her clients. “Challenges may exist in the world, but we continue,” said Wilson in her profile. This is Wilson’s second time being recognized as one of California’s top 100 lawyers by the publication.
Landsberg was recognized by Daily Journal for his work successfully representing HCR ManorCare in a lawsuit before the California Supreme Court that was brought by a former resident alleging his nursing home’s staff had neglected him. The state Supreme Court’s decision in the matter found that a resident claiming neglect could recover only $500 per lawsuit, not $500 for each violation cited in a complaint. Commenting on this outcome, Landsberg said, “I can't recall the last time a nursing home prevailed in a case like this. It's been at least three decades.” Landsberg was also recognized for his ongoing defense of Dignity Health against a former physician over whether a hearing officer appointed by the hospital to hear a physician's challenge to revocation of his staff privileges was biased due to his prospects for serving again as a hearing officer at the same hospital or at other affiliated hospitals within a hospital system.
