Stand and e-Deliver!: Ransomware v. Courts

In his latest column for Daily Journal, Manatt Appellate Partner Benjamin Shatz discussed the critical impact of cyberattacks on courts and how they can prepare to address potential threats. 

Recently, the Los Angeles County Superior Court fell victim to a ransomware attack which resulted in the temporary closure of their courthouses and systems. As seen in numerous cyberattacks targeting courts nationwide over the past few years, the consequences can be detrimental, particularly surrounding the breach of personal data. Among others, Shatz recounted one of the most well-known ransomware cases involving the Texas Appellate courts in which the restoration process for the systems and ransomed files spanned months. “Given the prevalence of attacks, all courts should prepare as if an attack is inevitable--because it is,” Shatz said.
