'Superior to What?' A Brief Explication of Complication

By: Benjamin G. Shatz
– Daily Journal

Manatt Appellate Partner Benjamin Shatz wrote an article for Daily Journal where he discussed the makeup of the California court system and explored the history of its development from its establishment in the mid-19th century to modern day.

In the article, Shatz analyzed “the defining milieu” of the California court system and examined how it has changed over time. He noted that while the current system is streamlined and easy to understand with its three-tier hierarchy, “history reveals a story of expanding and contracting types and numbers of courts,” adding that, “what seems simple today was not always that way.”
