Manatt Health managing director Chiquita Brooks-LaSure spoke with Wolters Kluwer’s Health Law Daily about how the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted inequalities within the U.S. healthcare system, and how healthcare stakeholders can address these disparities. In particular, she discussed the steps that federal and state agencies can take to support and incentivize providers to address those health inequities. Concerning inequity in maternal care, Brooks-LaSure stated that “states have the ability to shape policy related to who is covered, the duration of their coverage, the benefits they receive, and the delivery system through which they receive care. State Medicaid agencies can also partner with sister agencies to use their purchasing power to drive broader policy and cultural change to improve maternal health outcomes.”
