As reported by the Associated Press, Manatt is working with LatinoJustice to represent plaintiffs in a lawsuit seeking relief for Puerto Rican hurricane evacuees whose federal housing assistance vouchers were set to expire. Craig de Recat, a partner in the firm’s litigation practice and co-chair of the firm’s national trial practice, is leading Manatt’s efforts.
De Recat told the publication that evacuees had not been informed properly that their voucher program was ending and as such, many of them found out by watching television.
Had the vouchers expired, the evacuees could have been evicted from the hotels they were residing in. The publication noted that a judge ordered federal emergency officials to extend vouchers for temporary hotel housing for nearly 1,700 Puerto Rican hurricane evacuees.
