Global Competition Scrutiny Gains Traction with AI Leaders

Manatt Antitrust and Competition Partner David Reichenberg wrote an article for Forbes about the continued and latest scrutiny by government agencies on market leaders' use and dealings regarding artificial intelligence (AI). Global enforcers have expressed concerns surrounding potential consumer and business harm that would allegedly result from certain kinds of dealings. 

After two major technology companies halted their involvement with OpenAI’s board, some believe the move was a result of government agencies’ actions regarding their concerns that AI leaders could impact the development of AI use cases to play in favor of their investors. Four government agencies recently issued a joint statement voicing these concerns, including potential deals between AI firms that could benefit them at the cost of the public. “Put another way, the government is using the consumer protection, antitrust, and even labor angles (for jobs that may be replaced by AI) to ensure that the advancement of AI does not come at too great a societal cost,” wrote Reichenberg.
