Manatt Votes is a nonpartisan, nationwide initiative that provides resources to facilitate and support the right to exercise one of the most precious and fought-for rights that citizens have―the right to vote.
Our Manatt Votes initiative focuses on:
- Assisting the nonpartisan Election Protection (EP) coalition in ensuring all voters have an equal opportunity to participate in elections.
- Ongoing pro bono impact litigation relating to voting rights and encouragement of civic engagement throughout the Manatt community.
- Providing resources for all members of our nationwide Manatt team, our friends, our families, the communities in which we reside and the communities in which our offices are located, regardless of party affiliation. Note that we also offer time off to our employees to vote in person on Election Day; we encourage everyone to vote in a safe manner.
Election Protection
Through our Manatt Votes initiative, we encourage all of our professionals—both attorneys and consultants—to volunteer with EP efforts and help ensure citizens across the nation have an equal opportunity to vote and have that vote count.

Voting Rights
Manatt engages in ongoing and impactful pro bono litigation related to voting rights, which most recently has included:
- Assisting the League of Women Voters of San Luis Obispo County in challenging and overturning the adoption of a supervisorial district map that violated California’s FAIR MAPS Act and the California Constitution, showing that it was designed to and did favor one political party over another, deferred and diluted the rights of voters registered with one political party, and interfered with established communities of interest in the County. More
- Working with the Native American Rights Fund, Public Counsel, the Law Office of Bryan Sells and the Law Office of Randy Seiler to file a lawsuit on behalf of the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe and individual voters against the Lyman County Board of Commissioners for supporting an unfair at-large voting system that delayed the rollout of fair election districts for Native American voters in South Dakota.
