Manatt Entertainment Leader Jordan Bromley was quoted in CNBC discussing revenue generation for artists through Christmas and music royalty streams.

In the music industry, one type of royalty stream is for music composition and another for sound recording. “If you’re a songwriter with no record revenue, it’s hard to make a living even if you’re making hits,” Bromley said. An artist’s portion of the recording revenue compared to the label’s is broad in range, dependent on the contract.

Exploring Mariah Carey’s iconic song “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” Bromley said Manatt estimated the generated earnings at around $3.4 million per year, $103 million over 30 years and $9.8 million in royalties from 2 billion global Spotify streams. With Carey possessing copyrights to the song composition and sound recording, she is receiving payments on both sides as well as royalties whenever her song is played publicly. She and her co-writer shared writing credits with publishers, but typically song recording generates four to five times the revenue of songwriting.
