Manatt senior partner L. Lee Phillips, entertainment leader Lindsay Conner and partner John Gatti were named 2019 “Power Lawyers” by The Hollywood Reporter. This annual list, now in its 13th year, honors the top 100 lawyers in Hollywood who are behind the most prominent, high-profile cases in the entertainment industry.
Phillips was additionally named a “Legal Legend” by The Hollywood Reporter for his extensive career and track record in the entertainment law field. The magazine noted his work with music executive David Geffen, whom he guided through the founding of Geffen Records, a label that signed acts including Jackson Browne and Joni Mitchell. The magazine also highlighted Phillips’ long-term relationships with music legends such as Burt Bacharach and Barbra Streisand.
Conner, leader of Manatt’s entertainment group, was recognized in his profile for his work with China’s Perfect World Pictures in a deal with Alcon Entertainment and Paws Inc. Conner handled the sixth-season Netflix pickup of Bojack Horseman and helped with the sale of Undone to Amazon and the sale of Odd Man Out to YouTube Red.
In its profile of Gatti, The Hollywood Reporter highlighted his representation of Michael Moore in a dispute over his documentary Fahrenheit 9/11 and a lawsuit he is handling for 38 Special involving the band’s name. Gatti is additionally handling content licensing issues for AT&T/DirecTV and exploring e-sports and virtual reality.
