In Manatt Appellate Partner Ben Shatz’s most recent column for Daily Journal, he discussed the world of appellate books, how it has changed with the popularization of online sources, and offered suggestions on the best literature for appellate practitioners to add to their bookshelves.
In the article, Shatz discussed how some law texts—like the California Civil Practice Statutes and Rules Annotated, or “5-in-1”—have become obsolete due to their availability online. However, he noted that it is still important to have physical copies of certain books, such as citation and practice guides, to ensure consistent familiarity with the content and for ease of access. He went on to provide suggested reading, which included books by Justice Antonin Scalia and Bryan Garner; various language books and dictionaries; and several appellate practice books, among others.
