Manatt Privacy Co-Chair Interviewed on Mobile Shopping App Policies and Permissions

Manatt's Donna Wilson, co-chair of the firm's Privacy and Date Security practice, was interviewed by CreditCards.com for an article on the data that is being collected by mobile shopping apps.

CreditCards.com reports that a Federal Trade Commission study recently found that many mobile shopping apps lack privacy and data security protection. After conducting its own study, CreditCards.com found that the policy language for apps it examined was often dense with vague phrases. The app policies and permissions were also fairly extensive, often requiring multiple screen-swipes to get through the whole document or clicking multiple links to find and read all relevant information.

"Regulators acknowledge that the size of policies on a small mobile screen can pose readability problems to the consumer," said Wilson. "It's about balancing technological and practical challenges by making sure disclosures are made in a way that's meaningful, but that's not easy."
