Manatt's David Huard, co-chair of the firm's Energy, Environment & Natural Resources practice, spoke to Law360 on the challenges that U.S. utilities and the attorneys who represent them are facing.
As reported by Law360, there are a number of issues that add up to a challenging operating environment for U.S. utility companies, including seismic shifts in traditional power sources, increased unbundling of power generation and transmission, and the ascendance of renewable energy on the electric grid.
"The biggest worry, I think, for the utility in-house attorney is the ever-shrinking world of the utility," said Huard. "What are we going to look like in 25 years, 10 years, even five years? Are we just going to be pipes and wires? Are we even going to be in the generation game anymore?"
