Robots Come to Hollywood: Breaking Down the Artificial Intelligence Provisions in the New SAG-AFTRA and WGA Contracts

Please join Manatt Entertainment Partner Sarah E. Moses and esteemed guests Jeffrey Bennett, General Counsel for SAG-AFTRA; Sean Graham, General Counsel for the Writers Guild of America West; and Jonathan Handel, Entertainment Lawyer and Journalist, to discuss the meaning and impact of the artificial intelligence provisions in the new SAG-AFTRA and WGA contracts.

2023 brought historic dual strikes to Hollywood as both the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and the Writers Guild of America (WGA) battled over the effects of the changing entertainment landscape, with movie and television studios and streamers represented by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. Both guilds now have new contracts in place, and artificial intelligence is more central than ever. The panelists will discuss how and when writers and companies can use artificial intelligence to generate written material, when companies can use digital replicas and how performers can be paid for and consent to that use, what the future holds for synthetic performers, and much more.
