In spite of increasing health care coverage for children, there has been an overall decline in the utilization of preventive and wellness services. This falling utilization is especially pronounced in lower-income households and among Black, Latino and Asian children. At the same time as preventive care uptake has declined, mental illness and suicide attempt rates have risen, with the growth most notable in the 12–17 age group.
With 40.1 million children and youth in the United States enrolled in Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), there has been a flurry of activity around increasing Medicaid coverage of preventive and treatment services for children and youth, including new Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) guidance on covering health care services in schools. Released in May 2023 in consultation with the Department of Education, the new guidance highlights how schools can play a critical role in providing health care to children. In a new webinar, Manatt spotlights real-life examples of states that are pushing the envelope in providing school-based services. Key topics include:
- An overview of the new CMS guidance and how it can simplify providing school-based physical and behavioral health care services to children and youth
- A spotlight on states and providers that are pushing the envelope and going beyond the norm in delivering innovative school-based services
- Strategies for expanding school-based health care offerings
- Proven approaches for taking advantage of previously existing and new opportunities to cover services for children and youth
- Next steps for Medicaid and education agencies to partner in improving care for children and youth
