Chatham Quoted on AI Celebrity Scams in The Ankler

‘Whack-a-Mole’: Agents and Lawyers Scramble to Fight AI Celeb Ad Scams
– The Ankler

Manatt Entertainment Partner Christopher Chatham was quoted in The Ankler discussing how celebrities and influencers are trying to protect themselves against unauthorized uses of their likeness generated by artificial intelligence.

While the fraudulent use of a person’s image or voice to create an AI reproduction have valid legal claims, many public figures may not be able to seek recourse due to bad actors operating in a foreign jurisdiction and the high cost of litigation. Chatham said many influencers aren’t sure when to fight scammers, but there are steps he takes on behalf of his influential clients facing these situations.

"We are engaging major platforms to include specific provisions in our contracts to expedite the removal of infringing content," he said. "There needs to be a bigger conversation with these platforms to implement robust systems to prevent the creation and spread of unauthorized AI-generated clones.”

To meaningfully spur change both at a legislative level and with platforms directly, Chatham said prominent Hollywood stars can—and already have started to—lead the charge.

"The moment has come for a prominent talent to emerge and be the face of this issue," he says. "I suspect you will see more high-profile talent coming forward to take this head-on and push for legal protections not only against unauthorized Al clones, but platforms that host Al clones as well."
