Manatt Secures Restraining Order For Recently Immigrated Mother and Child

Manatt Partner David Moran and Associate Noro Mejlumyan successfully obtained a three-year restraining order for a recently immigrated Armenian woman against her estranged husband.

In this complex case that involved issues of custody and visitation, child and spousal support, and preliminary property control, Moran and Mejlumyan were able to show evidence of the years of abuse the client endured. As a result, they secured an order of protection without needing the client to testify in court. Opposing counsel stipulated to a three-year CLETS (California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System) restraining order to be entered against the husband.

As part of the settlement, Manatt was also able to obtain other much-needed financial relief for the client. Specifically, the Court ordered that the client’s car, which her husband had wrongfully taken, be returned. Manatt also requested and obtained an order obligating the client’s husband to pay financial support until the child custody and spousal support obligations are determined by an appropriate court. Mejlumyan also provided counsel in Armenian, the client’s native language.

The case was referred to Manatt by its pro bono partner Los Angeles Center for Law and Justice
