Manatt’s Thomas McMorrow, a partner in the firm’s government and regulatory practice, was interviewed by Corporate Counsel for an article on data privacy and how it can become law.
The publication noted that the European Union and Canada have their own privacy laws, proposing that the United States should have a similar, federal law. A recently-passed California law will not go into effect until 2020.
“Dating back to the Reagan administration, pre-empting states around commercial acts became far less common,” said McMorrow. “Both parties tend to limit what they impose on states in the commercial sector.”
