Hochul and Williams Campaign for Lieutenant Governor Primary

In Wide Open Lieutenant Governor Primary, Hochul Targets Votes in Williams’ Backyard
– Gotham Gazette

Manatt’s Bruce Gyory, a senior advisor in the firm’s government and regulatory practice, was interviewed by the Gotham Gazette for an article on Jumaane Williams and Kathy Hochul’s campaign to become the next lieutenant governor for New York State.

Hochul is the incumbent and Williams is a Brooklyn city councilmember. The Gazette notes that more than half of Democratic primary voters are undecided, and communities of color are expected to play a large role in this election.

“Does Jumaane Williams start out with overwhelming black support?” said Gyory. “He didn’t back Bill Thompson [in the 2013 mayoral race], he backed de Blasio that time. He never endorsed Ken Thompson [for Brooklyn District Attorney] in the seminal reform race for black progressives in Brooklyn. He undercut black unity by not stepping out of the race for City Council [speaker] and backing [Robert] Cornegy, who had more support.”
