March 31, 2011 – CNN.com quoted ManattJones Global Strategies CEO and Chairman James R. Jones on the global reach of Mexican drug cartels.
As reported by CNN.com, three Mexican brothers were arrested in Malaysia in March 2008 after police seized 250 kilograms of methamphetamine and chemicals used to produce it. They are charged with violations of Malaysia’s Dangerous Drugs Act and await trial. The brothers’ lawyer says they were seafarers who found temporary factory work while waiting to board another ship in Malaysia, and they have no connection to cartels.
Experts noted that the Mexican cartels have spread their operations into Central and South America, but activities in Asia have been limited, if not nonexistent.
Jones, who is a former U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, told the publication that he was aware of Mexican cartels expanding the scope of their activities in recent years to West Africa and Europe. “But Asia? I had not heard that one,” he said.
