• Summer Associates

Manatt is committed to employing a diverse group of academically outstanding summer associates. Our program for summer associates is not just an "extended interview." We emphasize mentoring along with substantial client contact and participation in litigation proceedings and business deals to give our summer associates "real world" experiences. Projects are assigned through a determination of each Summer Associate’s preference. Work is regularly monitored and feedback is given from supervising attorneys. Above all, we encourage our Summer Associates to participate fully in the firm’s day-to-day life - an experience that allows our Summer Associates and members of the Firm to learn more about each other.

      Candidates
Manatt seeks candidates with outstanding academic records, who have participated in law school activities including moot court, law review or other activities that demonstrate a commitment to learning and to service, as well as previous business, academic and professional experience.

      How to Apply
We are no longer accepting summer associate applications as we have completed our student hiring for our 2013 Summer Associate Program.

      Summer Associate Mentoring Program
The goal of our Summer Associate Mentoring Program is to develop a comprehensive and personalized program for each Summer Associate. Summer associates will be assigned a mentor team consisting of an associate and partner from the summer associate’s expressed areas of interest. The mentor team will meet regularly to answer questions, provide advice, review work assignments and aid in integration into the Firm. Manatt believes that this team-based approach to mentoring will give the summer associate the opportunity to receive one-on-one feedback, consultation and guidance throughout the summer.

      Summer Associate Evaluation Process
Summer associates at Manatt are evaluated on quality of written work, demonstrated analytical ability, desire and capacity to take on responsibility, maturity, judgment and ability to work with others. Manatt recognizes that each individual has particular strengths and each has reached a different level of potential at this early stage in their career. Summer associates are provided substantial feedback on a regular basis. Formal mid-summer and end-of-summer evaluations are conducted to ensure an in-depth assessment of the summer associate’s progress.

      Compensation
Summer associate salaries are competitive with comparable top-tier firms. Associates who will be spending the majority of their time in the Firm’s Litigation Division and have successfully completed a clerkship in a federal district court, federal appeals court, or United States or state supreme court of at least one year, are eligible to receive a judicial clerkship bonus in an amount competitive with market standards.
